POP-UP : The Muse’ Exogenesis Symphony

The Exogenesis Symphony

Excerpt from the album « The Resistance », the Exogenesis Symphony claims a link with classical music. In this piece, Muse will develop a little bit more these references through a musical langage using the classical legacy : strings, brasses, acoustic piano and choirs will be mixed to the guitars, electro’ sounds, drums and, of course, to the very lyrical voice of Matthew Bellamy.

Cross-Pollination

The 2nd movement of the Symphony is for me the perfect representation of all those classical influences living inside their music.

Muse – Symphonie Exogenesis – Cross-Pollination

This part of the Symphony is structured  like a sonata movement : ABA’

Part A presents three elements :

  • From the beginning to the 24th second : chromatic introduction referring itself to the Chopin’s Etude n°10 opus 25.

The association between the 2nd movement of the Muse’s symphony  and the Etude op.25 n°10 of Chopin.

  • From 24th to the 56th second : introduction of a gimmick which can remind the Liszt’ Study : Feux Follets

The assocation between the Franz Liszt’ study Feux Follets and the 2nd movement of the Exogenesis Symphony.

  • From 0’56 to 1’51 : an accompaniment in the mood of Chopin arrives with a beautiful melodic line

Excerpt from the 2nd movemement of the Exogenesis Symphony.

B is coming to 1’51

B is a rocky theme with the entrance of the guitars, bass and drums.

Cross-Pollination – Part B

From 2’56 to the end, back in A’

Acoustics sounds are coming back with the Liszt’s gimmick (almost acoustic because the piano is in fact a hybrid piano and the choirs are synthetized)

Finally, to take back my conclusion for my article « The Art of the Mood », I think one of the great Muse’s features is the influence. An influence fed by multiple horizons of which these classical inspirations belong.

However, this specificity doesn’t consist so much in these inspirations towards classical music but in their ability to absorb classical music’s codes to design their own music. I think that’s the secret, because all these inspirations create a sensual aspect which underline a little bit more, like a chiaroscuro, the abrupt sonorities of rock music.

Pop-Up is a little chronicle presenting an idea linking classical music with pop culture. Little candy, you can consume it just for pleasure.
